Children’s Programming

“Traveling Tales”

“Traveling Tales” is our new preschool outreach program at the library, furnished to local daycare providers who wish to participate in the program.  Books are selected by library staff, checked out to the daycare providers, and along with simple activities and/or coloring pages, are distributed to the day-cares in Calmar in bright, colorful book bags, delivered by library staff every other week.  These books can then be used for the daycare providers to read to little ones while in their care, or sent home with children to be returned to the provider when they are finished with them.  Library staff then retrieves the book bags, checks the books back into the library and provides a new supply of books, beginning the process again.

The program began in late fall 2015 and has proven to be very successful thus far.  Daycare providers have found this method of providing books and activities directly to their homes much more “child-friendly”, and they themselves are pleased that they don’t have to transport little ones to the library weekly for story time, especially since they usually care for babies and young toddlers along with their older preschoolers.  It is a “win-win” for everyone involved.
